In The Age of Artificial Intelligence

"As more and more artificial intelligence is entering into the world, more and more emotional intelligence must enter into leadership."
Amit Ray

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is the science of designing machines that can think like people. AI technology can process vast amounts of data in ways beyond human capability. With astonishing speed, AI can instantly recognize patterns, make decisions and judgments.

AI and EQ are worlds apart

Claude Werder writes, "Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly advancing, as seen by the explosion of chatbots developed by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and others. While AI delivers enormous productivity gains, it lacks human emotional intelligence — the ability to understand, empathize, and connect on an emotional level." (1)

EQ is Essential for Human Interactions:

Dr. Judith Cardenas says, "In a world where virtual communication is becoming the norm, the ability to connect with others on an emotional level is much in need. EQ is essential in building strong relationships, creating trust and loyalty, resolving conflicts, and managing diverse perspectives effectively. Unlike AI, humans can sense emotions and pick up nonverbal cues, vital in improving collaboration and communication." (4)

Ahead of Its Time

An episode from the Sci-Fi television series "Star Trek," which ran from September 1966 to June 1969, aired an episode entitled "The Ultimate Computer," aired during the second season… The Federation Starship Enterprise is summoned to a space station without explanation. …The Enterprise will be a test vessel for the M-5 Multitronic System, a revolutionary tactical and control computer… The M-5 is to handle all ship functions without human assistance…

"In the episode, during a mock attack drill, the computer goes rogue and takes control of the Starship Enterprise, taking this to be an actual attack, and the crew now struggles to disable the computer." (2)

Artificial Intelligence Has Its Limits

John M. Hobbs takes on the task of separating fact from fiction; here's one myth answered in ChatGPT's own words!

Myth 1: AI is sentient

Sentience refers to the capacity for consciousness, self-awareness, and subjective experience, which are qualities attributed to living beings, particularly humans.

Reality 1: No, it isn't

Let ChatGPT answer this one. When asked if AI is sentient, the system answered,

"No, as an AI language model, I am not sentient. I do not possess consciousness, self-awareness, or subjective experiences. I operate based on algorithms and statistical patterns to generate text and provide responses to user inputs. While I can simulate human-like conversations and provide information, it is important to understand that I am an artificial intelligence program created by OpenAI, and my responses are generated based on patterns and examples in the data I have been trained on."

While AI can exhibit impressive capabilities in areas like natural language processing, image recognition, and problem-solving, these abilities are based on mathematical models and computational processes rather than conscious experience. AI systems lack the inherent qualities of human sentience, such as consciousness, emotions, intuition, and the ability to reflect on their own existence (3)

In Closing, Dr. Judith Cardenas says, "Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expanding at an unprecedented pace, transforming the world of work in ways we never thought possible. From automating mundane tasks to improving decision-making processes, AI reshapes organizational structures and creates new growth opportunities.

While AI may be able to perform complex tasks, it lacks one important attribute that is essential for human interactions Emotional Intelligence (EQ). The question arises: does EQ matter in the new world of AI? The answer is a resounding yes!" (4)
